Conroe ISD will remain closed through at least Wednesday, Feb. 17, and Thursday, Feb. 18, after the winter storm iced over roads, and caused significant, random power and water outages.

“After further evaluation of the impact of recent weather events in addition to the inclement weather forecast for our area, Conroe ISD will be closed on Wednesday, February 17, and Thursday, February 18,” the district said in a message shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday. “All extracurricular activities scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday are canceled or will be rescheduled. A decision about Friday, February 19, will be announced by 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 18.”

Initially, the district only announced the closure for Tuesday.

The district on Friday announced it would closed Tuesday, Feb. 16 after snow and ice were all but certain. CISD schools were already closed Monday for President’s Day.

Energy companies that service the school district experienced intentional and unintentional power losses for a variety of reasons including plants icing over, increased power use exceeding capacity due to low temperatures, and ERCOT – the state’s energy reliability group – mandating a series of forced brownouts to cope with the first two issues to prevent systemwide failure.
