Caney Creek High School is no longer the smallest high school in Conroe ISD. Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, CCHS surpassed Oak Ridge High School in total enrollment.

Enrollment has increased by 145 students since the end of the 2023-2024 school year, allowing CCHS to pass ORHS by 50 students. Additionally, CCHS is 100 students smaller than The Woodlands College Park High School.

REASON FOR GROWTH

The growth stems from several new subdivisions in the feeder zone including Evergreen, Mavera, Artavia and Granger Pines. The new neighborhoods being built is the outcome of the growing population in the Conroe area.

OVERPOPULATION

CCHS is not at capacity as Principal Dr. Terri Benson stated, we still have unused classrooms but she suspects they will be utilized next year.

When CCHS hits capacity, the district will install portables.

CURRENT RESPONSE TO OVERCROWDING

Benson met with all the Caney Creek feeder zone principals to discuss the growth they have been seeing over the years. They discussed needed changes that will ensure spatial needs and the safety aspects are met for each student.

These changes included, at the high-school campus, opening the doors at 6am to help with hallway traffic, using classrooms for multiple teachers, limiting movement in the hallways including one-way stairwells, changing the parking lots to improve morning and afterschool traffic, implementing an electronic hall pass system and enforcing the ID policy for safety purposes.

THEY KEEP COMING

Benson expects the growth to continue. She expects the 2025 school enrollment to surpass the 2024 enrollment by 243 students.

NINTH-GRADE CAMPUS

Within the next two years, CCHS will be opening a ninth-grade campus to accommodate the student growth. A previous Compass article stated that the bond to create a new freshman campus was passed in 2023 and should be up and running by August of 2027.
