How would other people describe you?
Outgoing and I’m a loyal person a lot of people will tell you that, and normally when i go somewhere i commit to something i stay true to it.
Was there a career you wanted to pursue OR pursued before teaching.
I wanted to be on the radio. I was actually on the radio for about 10 years of my life before I got into education that was from high school and all the way through college. And a couple years after college, I worked in radio and television, but when I got out of school,i realized that the radio industry is changing dramatically, and there’s not a lot of money left in it, and there is more automation, I guess you could say pre recorded stuff, so They don’t need a lot of on air talent anymore. And I decided to go ahead and pursue my career in education.
Tell us about how you got into teaching.
I was influenced by my high school baseball coaches. They meant a lot to me, and they taught me what it was like to be an athlete and to be a leader, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps.
What do you do outside of school for fun? Why?
I like to play golf and I like to hangout with friends and family. I’m a huge griller, I like to smoke briskets and ribs and sausage on the weekends and I enjoy watching my favorite Houston sports teams.
When people get to know you, what are they most surprised to learn about you?
I was in radio and television, and I got to actually interview and hang out with a bunch of really cool people in the music industry and got to interview country music superstars. I’m still good friends to this day with Cody Johnson. We talk and text back and forth quite a bit.
Tell us the story about what you are most proud of yourself for.
I would say that I’m proud of not only my accomplishments academically, but the family that I have. I’m really proud of my son and where he’s at in his life, and I’m proud that he made straight A’s this past nine weeks. We really push hard for academics in our household. So I’d say I’m proud of that.
Who is someone you are thankful for and why?
I’m thankful everyday for my family, especially my wife and my son. I mean being a coach’s wife, there are times that I don’t get home till 10-11, o’clock at night, but she’s always got me a plate sitting on the stove or in the microwave, and she keeps us fed, and she tolerates my crazy schedule. So I’m thankful for definitely her and my family, and, of course, my extended family as well.
What advice would you give to someone pursuing a career similar to yours?
Follow your own lead, don’t doubt yourself and know you’re helping others and making a huge impact.
What do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope that I leave a legacy for my student athletes. It’s always a great feeling. I’ve been this long enough where I have somebody reach out to me and say, Thank you, Coach. You were right for everything you did. So I think that I want to be remembered as the coach that, hey, I may have been strict, but I was always fair. And that’s what I want to be known as, as a coach that everyone respected and loved.
What’s on your bucket list?
I would love to go to Europe and see a soccer match at one of those stadiums.
