How would other people describe you?
Honest, fun, and smart.
Was there a career you wanted to pursue OR pursued before teaching.
I was in the military prior to teaching. I also thought at one point about becoming either a doctor or a geologist.
Tell us about how you got into teaching.
When I was in college, I was asked to lead a peer tutorial group for one of my science classes, and the students that I was helping told me that I was better at explaining the material than the teacher. I had realized that I had a gift for it, so I ended up getting into it after graduation.
What do you do outside of school for fun? Why?
Right now, it has to be cooking. I enjoy cooking quite a bit. I also used to do sailing, but it’s an expensive hobby.
When people get to know you, what are they most surprised to learn about you?
I think my physical appearance and my general abilities when it comes to intellect don’t quite mesh. I don’t look smart. When people get to know me, they’re surprised that i have the amount of intelligence that I was blessed with.
Tell us the story about what you are most proud of yourself for.
One of the more recent ones, I had a student that had a really difficult home life, was struggling academically and struggled behaviorally, and I was able to help him.
Who is someone you are thankful for and why?
I have an uncle who I always looked up to. He was kind of my hero. The way he treats other people is the reason I look up to him.
What advice would you give to someone pursuing a career similar to yours?
Keep an open mind and remember that everyone you meet, whether they’re an adult or a student, it doesn’t matter that they’re all unique individuals.
What do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope I’m remembered as a good teacher. That I’m able to make a difference in the lives of my students, whether it’s content related or otherwise.
What’s on your bucket list?
I have visited 49 states and I hope that this year I can visit the last one, which would be Alaska.
