Girls Lift Themselves to State

Brandon Skero

When you think of a weightlifter you think of big, muscular men, like The Rock, but that is not the case. Two of our girls made it all the way to the state meet on March 21 by lifting over 700lbs. each.
Sophomore Breanne Haesche finished 6th in her weight class and set her personal best total weight of 735lbs. This was her second State appearance after having also made it last year. Junior Kaley Gollnisch finished 13th in her weight class and also set her personal best at 905lbs.
“I feel pretty good about how I did considering some of the girls I went against,” Gollnisch said.
Along with the girls, the Creek also had three boys earn their chance to compete in their State Meet on March 28.
Senior Alex Holsinger lifted a total weight of 1365lbs. and finished 14th in his class. Senior Logan Phillips achieved a total weight of 1490lbs. placing him 7th. Junior Chase Kellar finished with a total of 1615lbs. placing 15th and was happy with his results after taking the year off last year.
“I felt like I could do it this year and I ended up making it all the way to State,” Kellar said.
This year both groups grew and improved with the help of Coach Garza and he’s someone they credit a lot of their success.
“Coach Garza really helped me a lot this year,” Gollnisch said.
To a normal person to hear how much weight a powerlifter can lift it can be a bit of a shock.
“People are baffled by how much weight I lift at such a young age,” Kellar said.
If you see anyone mentioned make sure to congratulate them on their great year!
