How would other people describe you?
Other people will describe me as an extrovert, caring, and very creative. I agree with the creative part, but I think that I’m an introvert. I have to be very comfortable with people to get that extrovert out of me.
Was there a career you wanted to pursue OR pursued before teaching.
I wanted to become an architect, but then I moved to the US, and then everything changed. I was also interested in being an oil and gas engineer.
Tell us about how you got into teaching.
My ESL teacher was very inspirational to me, and just seeing the way that she cared about students allowed me to kind of explore that career, and that’s what got me into it. So that’s why, like, after I graduated high school, I started working as a teacher assistant, and then just going to college after school, or, you know, just during the day, things like that.
What do you do outside of school for fun? Why?
lift weights. That’s what I like to do. I love karaoke. I love to sing karaoke in Spanish. I don’t like to sing in English. and I like to skydive.
When people get to know you, what are they most surprised to learn about you?
Just depends on the people that get to know me, like if it’s people that are not very familiar with how people of a different culture has made it to be successful, and they hear my story that I came here, I didn’t speak English, and I was able to work hard and get to where I am. They get very surprised
Tell us the story about what you are most proud of yourself for?
I collaborated with other authors for a book. So I have a chapter written in a book. It’s called Concrete connections, and it just talks about how you made those connections with people. So in my case, it was how I made connections with my students and families. So I think that’s one of the things that made me proud. Prior to that, I had participated in a workshop where I was able to publish a poem about things that are out of my comfort zone.
Who is someone you are thankful for and why?
Someone I’m thankful for, if it’s family, my mom, she was a stay at home mom, and she took care of us like children from morning to night, and she always made sure that we had everything we needed, regardless of whatever circumstances they were going through, so that we could be successful and then professional. I’ve had many people that have inspired me, you know, throughout the years, like my first ESL teacher and then the first principal that I got to work with, who inspired me to become an assistant principal, and then other principals that I work with, so right now, like my biggest person that I look up to Is Dr. Benson.
What advice would you give to someone pursuing a career similar to yours?
Education is a career where sometimes you don’t get the gratification you expect, and people don’t value your job, but it’s always nice to get the recognition from your students and from the people that you help. So my only advice is that if you want to pursue this career, make sure that you are passionate about it, because you are not going to be a billionaire, you know, but in your heart, you’re gonna have so much more that is worth more than a billion dollars.
What do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope that people remember me by how I always try to help others, regardless of where they came from, like students and families and anybody that needs my help.
What’s on your bucket list?
I want to go to South Korea and Greece are my two places that I need to go to.
