The Disease has Started
Sep 4, 2015
There’s a new affliction that is striking around the school. The symptoms of this disease leaves students having a hard time to get out of bed, running late to class, and having difficult time comprehending things in their classes.
It is the barely the second week of school and students already have senioritis. Senioritis causes seniors to have lack of motivation towards their studies. This disorder strikes high school seniors during their mid-year, where college acceptance letters come in. But the disorder came earlier than expected to many students this year.
“You can’t avoid senioritis, it creeps up on you,” senior Vanessa Merino said.
Senioritis could be very sneaky, students would feel, sleepy, not feeling motivated to do things or get distracted easily. Many don’t know they have the symptoms until they notice their grades start to drop or lose interest in certain things.
“The feeling of not wanting to do any of the work, being stressed with SAT, ACT tests, college essays, it’s stressful. I just want to go home and take a nap!” senior Anna Posada said.
Taking a nap may not always be the best way to avoid the sickness if a college paper is due the next day. Even though early in the year many seniors are applying to colleges, working after school, or completing deadlines for scholarships, many get off track from what is really going on around them.
“I sometimes feel very nervous, because we have college applications, and essays, which can be very overwhelming, which sadly makes me not focus on what is really important at the moment, like studying for my math test that will take place the next day,” senior Ashley Delagraza said.
There are many reasons why senioritis happens. Could be when seniors know they are already accepted in a college and they feel like they have nothing to worry about, or thinking it’s their last year and they should be going out doing “fun” stuff such as going out to parties and staying up late with friends since it’s their last year before they enter “adulthood”.
“We have been in school for 13 years, if you count kindergarten, and we think we are old enough to make our own decisions,” Delagraza said.
There might only be one cure for this dreadful disease that has seniors staring at the clocks waiting for it to strike 2:35 pm to go home and sleep. Graduation, which will be held on May 28, 2016 at Sam Houston Stadium.
