Q&A with new CCHS coaches

Justin Boleyn – football

Why do you like to coach?

Football is my primary sport and is my favorite to coach having played it and been a fan of it all my life.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish this year?

In speaking of goals in coaching, obviously you look to have a successful season. My goal for the offensive line this year is to be consistent and have my unit give us an opportunity to win each week. So far, our unit has done that, and I am extremely proud of them.

How do you plan to achieve these goals this year?

Being consistent in my coaching and conveying to my players that they have to raise their standards of performance on the football field. Truthfully speaking, you can only get kids to push themselves to meet those standards by building relationships with them. I feel like I am doing that, I would hope that when this season is finished they will agree that we did build those relationships.

Chad Rachal – football

Why do you like to coach?

Sports has pretty much been my life since I was a little kid. I’ve worked in professional and college sports. For me being a coach is something I’ve always wanted to get into. I love sports and I love helping kids get better, and if I can help them get better in the classroom and on the football field then my life is complete.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish this year?

Couple of kids understand how to play football safely first and to develop their skills to get ready for varsity. That’s pretty much the two things to play safely and learn how to not hurt themselves and other kids and to develop them as much as I can.

How do you plan to achieve these goals this year?

Work closely with the varsity coaches to learn the techniques and the schemes that they want me to coach the boys and just implement it as best as I can everyday at practice.

Michael Molenaar – Swim

Why do you like to coach?

I like to coach because I enjoy seeing athletic improvement and working on developing new talent. Helping other people reach their goals is deeply satisfying for me. It also allows me to continually improve my own methods and adapt to a changing and challenging sport. I also remember my own coaches from various sports when I was growing up, and it’s important for me to carry on their work, in a sense.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish this year?

My main goal is helping my swimmers to improve their times. The best way to measure a team’s progress is to gauge each individual’s inner improvement. A secondary goal is increasing the swim team’s visibility on campus and increasing our numbers. Our team has 18 members right now and I think we can easily increase that by 50 percent with improved recruiting methods. I also am working to improve some types of basic mechanics, for example, flip turns and dives.

How do you plan  to achieve these goals this year?

The achievement of the first goal relies on swimmers being driven at practice everyday to push themselves to their limit. When challenging swim workouts are completed, endurance and stamina create a higher plateau so that both distance and time improves. Achieving better mechanics is driven by repeatedly practicing correct technique, and then making adjustments based upon what can be made better.

Randy Appiah – basketball

Why do you like to coach?

I like coach, because I love to teach and inspire young men to come together to achieve a common goal. I love the process in seeing young men develop on and off the basketball court.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish this year?

Raise academic achievement. Raise social awareness of my kids on what’s going on globally. Improve basketball skills. Increase win total from last year. Raise community and school support of the basketball team. Make playoffs!

How do you plan to achieve these goals?

High expectations, instill accountability, mentorship/leadership/current news discussions, rigorous and organized practices, intense focus on competition and incremental improvement; have my basketball team attend various events/games of other groups/clubs in the school. Community service and creating inaugural youth league for feeder schools; and compete.

Aundre Branch – basketball

Why do you like to coach?

Coaching gives me an opportunity to assist and prepare student-athletes for various life instances on and off the court. It’s an opportunity to leave a legacy and guide athletes in a positive direction. Considering that I had a successful high school, college and professional career, coaching is my way of helping those with that share the same dreams I had when I was younger. To me, basketball is more to X’s and O’s. It’s the game of life, where I focus on teaching responsibility, accountability, hard work, commitment, sacrifice, having good character and dedication.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish this year?

My goal this year is to change the culture of Caney Creek High School by bringing a winning tradition to the basketball program. For so many years, the basketball team hasn’t had much success. For whatever reasons that caused the lack of success, this region has many kids that are hungry for success.

I think with all of my experience and player’s commitment, we have an opportunity to bring Caney Creek basketball to a rise. By the next three years, I would like to see Caney Creek being district champs, making the playoffs, and having a program that produces more college prospects.

How do you plan to accomplish these goals?

Being that I have accomplish several accolades on the high school, college and professional level, I understand what it takes in order to succeed in basketball. I will challenge the players at a high level and set high expectations for them every single day. I will go out in the community and reach out to the feeder schools in order to train the coaches as well for different trainings for the younger kids. Getting the community involved in supporting the basketball program is going to be the most challenging task. But “I can do all things in Christ that strengthens me” is and always be my belief. With my previous experiences and having the opportunity to play for the Harlem Globetrotters, I have seen and learned many strategies to bring the Caney Creek basketball program to be one of the hottest programs in the state of Texas.

Anna Carroll – track

Why do you like to coach?

I love coaching because it provides the opportunity for a more dynamic relationship with our students. Students who may struggle in the classroom can excel in whatever sport they choose. Sports are such a positive outlet for students and even for coaches as well. I love seeing students work hard through pain and learn how to endure when life gets hard or your body is sore.  You can learn so many valuable skills that can help you in the classroom and in life after school when participating in sports.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish this year?

I am hoping to grow the long-distance track program, making it a more competitive program. I am also hoping to introduce many of the athletes to what it means and what they need in order to be successful distance runners.

How do you plan to achieve these goals this year?

As a new addition to the coaching team at Caney Creek, achieving my goals is all about networking and connecting with students. In order to make a successful program, I have to have athletes, so motivating students to come out and run is the first step. Teaching the mental mentality that is needed for a distance runner is also an important step. You can run every day, but you have to have the mental strength to go far.
