Double block days allow for bigger projects, benchmarks

Caney Creek High School has tested out a double-block system twice so far this year and will utilize it twice more in the spring.

Principal Dr. Jeff Stichler says the double block gives students time for them to finish work and it gives them some more time for them to take tests. Students also finish bigger projects work and gives them a chance to get any missing work done to try to get their grade up, as well as complete benchmark tests.

Stichler was one of the ones that thought that the double block will be a good idea for the students.

“The double block days give students the chance to be in a classroom for two hours instead of one,” he said. “It really helps with projects and taking the benchmarks test.”

Science Department Chair Donna Hounihan thinks that the double block is a good idea for the students.

“It gives them the opportunity to have some lab days or not to have to break up testing into two day,” she said.

English teacher Jodi Garrett likes having double block days because of the time, but misses seeing all her students every day.

“I miss seeing my kids each day but i like having the long period to do things that take more time to complete,” she said.

Students were divided on the issue.

Freshman Carla Suarez says “I don’t like double block because I think it’s a lot of time and having a long period in a class is just too much.”

Freshman Brenda Lopez felt otherwise, saying, “I like it because I can watch my TV soaps when I am done with all my work.”

There are two more sets planned for the spring semester.
