Wrestlers aim for state

The wrestling program is aiming high this season after having a state qualifier last year.

Head Coach Jacob Ferguson said most of pre-season was spent on newcomers that have not wrestled before.

“A lot of guys were working hard in the spring and in the summer to play catch up with all the guys that have wrestled for a long time,” Coach Jacob Ferguson said.

The team has been making a lot of progress in every tournament and meet. With that, Ferguson sees a handful of students than can go to state.

There was one state qualifier last year and they are looking to improve that number.

“It’s been real fun to coach the guys and the girls,” Ferguson said. “Everybody is just getting way better and making progress.”

Last year, junior Juan Martinez qualified for state.

“I quit doing football and track because I wanted to stay committed to one,” Martinez said. “I chose wrestling because it’s the only sport that gets you out of your comfort zone.”

Ferguson said the team has not had any major injuries thus far.

“We’ve been real fortunate,” he said. “I mean we’ve had a bunch of little bumps and bruises, but nothing crazy yet and hopefully it stays that way.”

If anybody is thinking about joining wrestling, the wrestling team is mostly looking for freshmen and sophomores either boy or girl.
