Both girls and boys basketball teams have ended their seasons with record results.

The boys finished 11-21, the first time Caney Creek scored in the double digits since 2013 and the second-highest record in school history.

Boys head coach Randy Appiah said the boys have made cultural and environment changes, exhibit a more positive attitude and a “change of mindset.”

“Caney Creek is so used to losing that the players were determined to be pushed to succeed all expectations,” he said.

The girls team finished the season also improving over last year with a 6-22 record.

Girls head coach Jay White said the assistant coaches, Bethany and Stephen Meine have been a driving force behind the success this season.

Bethany Meine, who also coaches the freshman team, said she had the team focus more on the basics and a few number of plays, rather than a wide variety.

Stephen Meine, who also coaches the JV team, said a huge change he had to change his coaching method.

“Last year the girls didn’t mind the yelling and running back and forth on the court, but this group of girls on JV did not react well to high intensity. They preferred me to calmly sit and watch.”

He also made the girls focus on a few amount of plays.

Seniors Emily Gray, Erica Strawn and Zoe Meyer said their improvement was from practicing and putting in extra time.

“I stayed after working hard on my shoots,” Gray said. “I also help teach a little dribblers team and practice any chance I got.”

The girls believe the best improvement this year is the growth of chemistry.

“We’ve become closer this year compared to previous years, there wasn’t as much drama, we’ve grown as a family,” Strawn said, which Meyer echoed.

They also believe that positivity was a major key this whole season.
