Rodgers declared cancer free after bouts of surgery
May 22, 2018
Six months had to pass by for junior Layne Rodgers to hear the news he always wanted to find out: being cancer free.
LeeAnn Perry, Rodger’s mother, announced the good news to the public, via Facebook, on April 23. After amputation, they detected tumors on his lungs due to the spread of the osteosarcoma and had to go through chemotherapy. In less than a year, Rodgers has beat cancer.
Perry said, via Facebook, that Rodgers has fought hard with each of us by his side, cheering him on, holding him up and even carrying him when he didn’t have the strength to go.
“Words cannot begin to express how thankful we are for folks like you,” she wrote. “You prepared meals for us, helped around the house, prayed for us, encouraged us, gave financially to us and helped us in one way or another. We are blessed beyond our wildest imagination.”
As of now, they are getting fluid off of his remaining part of his leg. They will start physical therapy on May 17 to strengthen the remaining muscle in his leg and prepare it for the prosthesis.
“Y’all this is exciting,” Perry said. “ I love how God is working out the details and I love that his wonders can be seen through Layne. There’s no doubt he’s been with us every step of the way.”
They’ve began the process of getting his new leg. According to Perry, it will take anywhere from five to eight weeks before being able to walk out of the hospital with his new leg.
Perry said they have shared their goals, dreams and talked a little bit about expectations regarding his new leg.
“We discussed what kind of socket he wants and what kind of knee he wants,” she said. “The priciest part of the leg is the knee. Who knew? We still have to decide on a foot but that will be the easy part, I hope.”
Perry said they expected the unexpected and received a miracle.
“We are closing another chapter and we will begin a new one soon,” she said. “One you won’t want to miss.”
Rodgers chose to not be interviewed for this story.
