The boys soccer team earned a bi-district championship after defeating Port Neches-Grove.

It was the first time they won a playoff game since the 2012-2013 soccer season. They finished the season 11-1-1 in district. Top scorer was senior Omar Quintana, who scored an overall 24 goals in the season.

Senior Elias Castillo said his playoff experience was full of gratitude and pride.

“Gratitude towards my team mates for putting in the work and fighting for the win, and also towards the fans that show’d up,” Castillo said. “It was crazy the support that you could feel from them. The sense of pride came from the fact that I was part of this team.”

The players practiced during christmas and spring break. Sophomore Ulysses Cruz said more hours into practice made the players more focused this year than last year.

“Putting in more work helped a lot and having everyone concentrated in the game,” Cruz said.

In the beginning of the year, some players stayed after to run cross country. They got in shape, and were ready for the start of the season.

“Everybody put into the program,” senior Jose Rangel said.

They were all excited of winning 5-1 vs PNG. Unfortunately, Houston Wisdom put an end to their playoff dream.

The Panthers lost 4-1 to the Generals. Both Quintana and Castillo left the field with an injury. Quintana said he couldn’t believe the injury came at that moment.

“Why now? After such a great season, why this moment when my team needs me the most,” Quintana said. “I felt like the most unlucky person alive.”

This year’s varsity soccer team set the bar high. It won’t be easy for the next generation to accomplish something like this.

“What others have to say or expect about the soccer program plays no part in my mind,” Castillo said. “The Caney Creek soccer program is one that does its speaking on the field.”
