Wrestling district winner: A girl.

Junior Linda Marroquin became the first girl to win a district title at Caney Creek High School. She competed in the girls 148 class division, placing first at Lynn Lucas Middle School Feb 8.

Marroquin said she is aiming towards the state championship, but whatever god has planned for her is number one priority.

“I felt emotional because all I thought was ‘I went through literal blood, sweat, and tears for this’,” Marroquin said.

Marroquin said three things inspire her the most: God, Her team, and the people who said she couldn’t wrestle.

Wrestling coach Jacob Ferguson said that he was pumped for Linda’s achievements.

“Linda has always been one of the hardest workers in the wrestling room, she was very excited that her hard work had finally paid off,” Ferguson said. “I knew she had the ability to win, but I knew she had to string together a couple of matches and be consistent, which is what she did.”

Senior Aby Marroquin, one of Linda’s biggest supporter and sister, has been showing up to Linda’s meets since the beginning.

“My parents didn’t want her to be in wrestling,” Aby Marroquin said. “It’s something she loves. I know the feeling when you aren’t being supported in something you like and I didn’t want her to go through the same thing.”

Linda Marroquin did not place at state.
