Off Season is Critical for Preparation
Oct 8, 2013
Most students think the fall off season is a time where athletes relax and just play their sport. However, student-athletes actually spend their time working out and getting into shape for the coming season. Most off season programs consist of a weight and running program.
In off season baseball, Head Coach Kyle Tidwell has his baseball class run on Mondays and Wednesdays, lift weights on Tuesdays and Thursdays and skill train on Friday. Coach Tidwell’s goal is to have his team pick up where they left off last year to make a return to the postseason.
“It is a time to prepare for the season and get ready for what’s ahead,” senior Ryan Givens said. “It basically is a time to put in work!”
Girls soccer works on running long distance to build endurance. They also do training drills that help better their athleticism. Head Coach of girls soccer Gretchen Kloes even has her soccer girls lift weights.
“Our goal is to work on their fitness and to increase their soccer skill,” Kloes said. “We also go into the weight room to work on the four main weight lifts and we work a lot of core.”
Softball plans to turn their year around compared to last year. Head Coach Leann Williams already has a program set to accomplish that goal. Coach Williams has the girls run on Mondays and Wednesdays, lift weights on Tuesdays and Thursdays and skill train on Fridays.
“We go to the weight room a lot more this year and the girls who could only lift the bar last year are actually adding weight this year,” senior Lorraine Negrini said. “We also run for endurance this year and not just for punishment.”
In boys soccer, the team lifts weights on Mondays and Wednesdays, working on legs and core. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the team runs to build endurance.
“We run a lot to build endurance,” senior Israel Gutierrez said. “We lift weights and workout, too.”
Off season is not just a time to relax and play around. It is a time to work and prepare for the upcoming season.
