The Freegan movement is not something many people are aware of. In the mid-90’s a wave of anti-consumerism people to create a society that based itself on the emphasis of environmental and social rights, believing they are more important than economic goals. These people feel as if consumption is not than the best interest of society or the environment in which we all live.

Hardcore freegans are known for living in anarchist communities in the forest that surrounds suburbs and forests. Less extreme freegans believe in minimizing the environmental impact consumers make. This feelings comes from the “anti-consumerist” ideology that humans should live within substantial means and a hyper-consumerist society. These like minded people run free stores, urban gardens, communal bike programs and cool with disregarded food for the needy.

As extreme and unorthodox as this may seen, many people are unaware of one fact; half of the food in the United States will go to waste. Food Not Bombs, a charity, gives out free food to those who need it, while maintaining an ideology shared by numerous people. Freegans, along with many others believe that not enough is being done by those in power to help the hunger problem in America and around the world. One thing notable about the freegan way of life is that they are happy with the bare minimum but continuously try to make the world a better place.

Density populated areas such as New York City has overextended their garbage capacity and caused an increase in air and runoff pollution over the years, Wastefulness is a crime that we all commit but taking from the ideology the freegans live by; we can not waste all of what we have.
