On Sunday, Dec. 8th, a few students from The Creek met up in the Walgreens parking lot located at the intersection of 105 and loop 336 and sold baked goods such as brownies and cookies to raise money for the “Angel Tree” program that the school is taking part in.
Angel Tree is a program where kids from families who cant afford Christmas gifts write down a wish on a piece of paper and put it on display attached to a Christmas tree. At The Creek, or any other schools that participate in it, teachers can take one of these papers, or angels, and bring them back to their classroom. The students and teacher then go out and purchase an assortment of items to go to that angel. As a result, the child listed on the paper will receive presents to unwrap on Christmas morning..
This idea came about when junior Alyssa Mathews noticed that there were very many students who wouldn’t receive Christmas gifts this year. She then got some friends together and took action.
The students that were involved include junior Alyssa Mathews, senior Lauryn Cunningham, senior Jackie Bracewell, junior Amber Avila, junior Brianna Taylor, junior Lillian Jimenez, and junior Katrina Leggett.
Though they haven’t yet found out how many angels they were able to help with the money they raised, about $500 was donated to the program.
According to the students, the fundraiser had a pretty good turn out.
“A lot of people came,” said senior Jackie Bracewell “I guess they were drawn to us seeing us out there dancing and we all had Santa hats on.”
The students plan on holding another one of these events in future and maybe even making it a regular event for the creek. The students who took part in the fundraiser this time around said that it was well worth all of the hard work and time that they out into the event and that they would definitely enjoy having another event like this.
