The Creek was invited to Willis’ Invitational UIL Academic Meet on Jan. 18th. The Creek was represented by many teams such as the Journalism, Literary Criticism and Social Studies team.

The Literary Criticism team congratulated their newest member Katrina Cunanan for placing sixth at her first meet. They also celebrated their first place finish as a team. Which is promising going forward in the UIL season.

“I am very excited about this year’s team,” Literary Criticism coach Sheila Patel said. “They all do an amazing job. In fact, it is already looking like I am going to have a difficult time narrowing the team down to four for [district].”

The Creek’s Social Studies team also had a strong outing by placing first, second, third and fifth in the event. They also took home a first place team award.

“I was totally blown away,” Social Studies coach Karen Solberg said. “They far exceeded my expectations. The team has been working hard, so I was not surprised about how well they did.”

The Social Studies team were able to see a Cinderella story unfold right before their eyes. Before arriving to the meet the team was short a person and need someone to fill in that spot. Junior Cheryl Meredith was that someone and filled that spot, performing well by placing third.

“Pulling Cheryl off the bus to take the test and to place third place is just unheard of,” Solberg said.

Cheryl’s new teammates also had a few words to say about her.

“I thought it was impressive,” Social Studies member Collin Johnston said. “To take third place after only studying a couple of hours before the event.”

The Creek also placed in Current Event and Issues (Senior Dalton Cooper, 3rd), Persuasive speaking (Junior Collin Johnston, 4th), Poetry Interpretation (Senior Megan Ward, 1st) and Headline Writing (Senior Taylor Tanner, 4th). The next UIL Academic Meet will be held at New Caney High School on Feb. 22nd.
