The Creek’s art program was represented well with two art pieces, one of which being selected for a scholarship and the other a finalist spot in district.

Freshman Katrina Cunanan represented the art program with her art piece “Murphy,” a well drawn donkey. She became one of the top finalists selected in Conroe ISD for a submission of her piece to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“It was really surprising,” Cunanan said. “I did not think my art piece was going to be one of the top pieces. I thought that there would be a lot of others who did more advanced art than I did. I executed the art really well and it was awesome.”

Cunanan hopes that her art skills and “Murphy” open up doors for her in the future.

“I want to do something involving art,” Cunanan said. “This is going to help me because people in the art world will be able to see what I am doing now as a freshman.”

Senior Kylie Johnson received news that she would receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for her art piece of a dark skinned Native American with a colorful head dress, entitled “Heritage.” The HHCC selected Johnson’s painting at random out of a collection of art pieces at the district’s 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo gallery.

“I was surprised,” Johnson said. “I just did that piece for a grade but Renner told me that I should enter the competition. I just entered to enter, and when I found out I won, I was like, ‘Woah.’”

Johnson’s family background had some influence on what type of art piece she painted.

“I’m Cherokee Indian,” Johnson said. “That is the reason I went with the Indian piece and the colors are very free and vibrant just like the Indians.”

Both students were proud of the acknowledgment they received and were proud to represent the Creek’s art program.
