From Coach to Counselor
Apr 22, 2014
Mr. Ryan Rees was a World Geography teacher for freshmen for eight years and was also a baseball coach. He spent two years teaching geography in Houston, TX and then moved to Caney Creek where he taught the same subject for another six years. He then decided that he wanted to become a school guidance counselor.
For quite a few years, Rees had thought of a position for counseling students and his passion started for it a long time ago.
“In college my friend asked me to be a juvenile counselor and I fell in love with that job and wanted to be a counselor since then,” counselor Ryan Rees said.
While Rees was busy being a full-time teacher and coach, he also took on extra work to become a counselor.
“My motivation was that I found a job I really love and I love working with kids. So far, this job is good. Since I’m new I have some questions, but I enjoy it. My favorite thing is that I get to meet a lot of new kids that I wouldn’t of been able to meet and I get to see some of my old kids,” Rees said.
Being both a teacher and a coach are very different from each other than a counselor and require added responsibility and new things to learn.
“I like both jobs but I wanted to be a counselor more. What I miss about teaching and coaching is the competing, watching them grow as people and see them be successful,” Rees said.
Rees gets to see two very different perspectives of working in the school since he now takes on a completely different job description.
“It is strange to work in a different position but in the same school. I get to talk to a lot more teachers and it’s fun to move up in a place you enjoy. I get to see two different sides of the school,” Rees said.
