NOTE: While we LOVE our New Caney counterparts (shoutout District 13-6A!), we are NOT part of New Caney ISD, New Caney High School, nor any other iteration or portmanteau of New Caney Creek High School ISD. Please do not show up to New Caney. They will be confused and not have the fun, food and medals.

Arrival & Parking
Please look at the map located in the tournament Google Drive. Do not attempt to enter doors that are not marked. On Friday, use Gate D to enter & park if arriving before 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, use Gate B to enter.

Hotels
There are many hotel options located in Conroe or The Woodlands roughly 20-25 minutes away from the school.

Events
We will offer all UIL academic and speech events, except CX debate.  LD begins on Friday, as well as the written and hands-on portion of the computer science test. All other events will be held on Saturday.

Divisions
Sweepstakes awards, but not individual contest awards, will be divided into small/large squad divisions. Large/small squad divisions will be determined by the total number of entries each school submits. The top half of total school entries will be large squad & the bottom half will be small squad.

Materials
We will use third-party & original materials. (Subject to change based on availability)

  • Hexco: accounting, current issues & events, literary criticism, science, social studies, spelling & vocabulary
  • TMSCA: calculator applications, mathematics, number sense
  • A+: computer science written & hands-on
  • Original materials: copy editing, news writing, feature writing, headline writing, editorial writing, ready writing, extemporaneous speaking
  • Debate & Interp Topics: current interp categories & UIL Spring LD topic

Judging
Academic coaches are EXPECTED to grade. Schools with speech/debate entries must either provide a qualified and experienced judge for ALL rounds (including FINALS) or pay a $150 fee for each judge owed. Qualified hired judges will also be used as needed. You should provide a judge for every 4 debate entries, and every 6 speech entries. A single judge may cover one speech and one debate obligation. We prefer your judges to your money!

Hospitality
Food will be provided for coaches, judges and bus drivers, including dinner Friday night as well as breakfast, lunch, and a snack on Saturday. Concessions for students will be sold in the cafeteria.

Student Behavior
All competitors and visitors are held to the standards of conduct with Conroe Independent School District. A coach or other teacher from every school, or a parent must be on campus at all times while students from said school are present. Parents/guardians may attend the tournament with, and be responsible for, their children if a school representative is unavailable. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in forfeiting the school from competition. Academic, debate & speech competitors should be mindful of tournament etiquette by remaining silent in competition hallways. Disruptive behavior may result in disqualification or dismissal from the tournament at the tournament director’s discretion without refund. Students will be disqualified from their event if they are found wandering the hallways or destroying/defacing campus property. Yes, even after the event has completed.

Concessions & Food Trucks
There will be a concession stand for competitors.  Schools are free to bring their own food or, if time permits, leave campus for lunch. We ask you clean up all of your school’s trash in tournament common areas. We are working on also having food trucks available at certain times on Saturday only. There are very few food options in the immediate area. If you plan on providing lunch for your students, please plan accordingly.

Tournament Fees

Payment of Fees
Schools should bring a check payable to Caney Creek High School to cover all fees. If you are not able to have a check prepared in time, please have a proof of payment leave a copy with the registration table. All accounts must be paid in full within 30 days. All delinquent accounts are subject to a $100 fee.

  • Academic Events $10 per entry
  • Speech & Debate Events $20 per entry
  • Speech judging fees $150 per uncovered obligation (see above for details)

Drops
Invoices will lock at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3. Speech & debate no-shows on tournament day will result in a change to the invoice for double that student’s entry fees. Academic drops/no shows after the deadline will simply be a forfeit of the fee.

Academic Event Information

Cross Entries
These are allowed at your own risk. If your academic contestants wish to cross-enter events, please pay careful attention to the schedule to avoid time conflicts. We will not delay the start of academic contests for missing students! (We like to run on time or ahead of schedule.

Journalism & Ready Writing
Due to space and electrical plug availability constraints, the use of laptops will not be allowed in journalism events. We will offer these events in multiple computer lab and printing will be provided. There are no entry limits. We will attempt to seat everyone at a computer. In the case that news, feature, and editorial writing are filled to the computer capacity, Caney Creek competitors will write by hand to free computer space for guest competitors. If the labs still become full, there will be space for students to hand write. This should be resolved before the day of the tournament, but wanted to let you know so there are no surprises.

Entry Limits
We have no entry limits on any event. However, if an event exceeds the capacity of the rooms currently assigned, please be flexible as we may need to split across multiple rooms.

Awards & Materials
We will announce results throughout the day. Please make certain a representative from your school is present until results from ALL of your students’ events have been announced. Student papers will be available in the tab room. Blank copies of the tests will be emailed after the tournament concludes. Any unclaimed materials will be discarded after the tournament. We will NOT mail any unclaimed papers or awards.

Speech & Debate

Divisions & Events. There are no novice divisions. We will have all UIL speech & debate events except for policy debate & congressional debate. If you have a policy team that needs practice, email head coach Joseph Collatos ([email protected]) to see if we can accommodate that.

Cross Entry
Students may enter as many events as they choose EXCEPT they may only enter one extemp. We will NOT hold any rounds or academic contests for students who are late, regardless of cross entry. Although, if a student cross enters in poetry and prose, we will attempt to resolve speaker order on our end. Cross enter at your own risk!

Judging & Judge Expectations. Schools will be expected to either bring a QUALIFIED judge to the contest or pay a $150 judging fee in order to allow for CCHS to hire a contract judge. All money is used to hire quality judges to ensure quality ballots. School judges must be present FIFTEEN minutes prior to each round (unless they are currently judging) in order to ensure that the tournament runs on time. If a school judge is not present for judge call — they will have to pay a judge fee of $150 in order to cover judging for their absence. All judges will be listed on postings.

Prose and Poetry
UIL rules will apply. Documentation will be checked IF a challenge occurs. After verification of results, no documentation challenges will be heard.

Categories
NOTE:
If entries grow too large, we will need to make Round 2 a semifinals round. Traditionally, we have not had to, but don’t be shocked if you see us have to pivot.

  • Round 1 is Category A
  • Round 2 is Category B
  • Finals is reader’s choice

LD Debate
The current UIL topic will be used. Please see the UIL website. Prelims will be flighted (2 debates per round one after the other).  All rounds are pre-set using randomization software. There will be no powermatched rounds. We break to quarterfinals (Top 8 based on UIL ranking system) regardless of the size of the field (assuming it is larger than 8) in order to get students as many rounds as possible. We will break brackets (schools won’t hit in outrounds unless unavoidable).

Speech & Debate Swaps
We will not charge for substitutions as long as the original number of people entered does not change in the event.
