Caney Creek’s boys varsity soccer team finishes off the season by going to playoffs making this the sixth year in a row.

The team had a successful season with a total of 15 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie qualifying them again for playoffs.

“All round behavior, commitment, statistically preseason and season was pretty successful.” Varsity soccer coach Andrew McGregor said. “We also played really well in the playoff game. We definitely dominated.”

The team played their first playoff game against Magnolia West at the Buddy Moorhead stadium. Unfortunately, the season came to an end after Magnolia West scored a point ten minutes before the end of the second quarter.

“We actually had that game but we couldn’t finish it” Team Captain Jose Balderas said. “It was just that one mistake, a goalie mistake”

The team also came up short from winning first in district but came down in the last game. The team has been in the top four for years.

The goal differential was the best in the district this season. The team had the lowest goals scored against, most number of goals in district play, and scored a total of 72 goals which is above other teams and higher than past seasons. The team also broke a few past records.

For the last couple years the team has been trying to get better. McGregor tries to play as many 6a teams as possible in the preseason. Out of the 11 teams they played in preseason, 9 of them were 6a teams.

“It’s intentional,” McGregor said. “We are trying to play the best teams we possibly can and we did really well competitively against them”

McGregor believes the soccer program will continue the path of success. Due to the high statistics of this year, he sees the team improving more and the scores getting higher.

“Our top goal scores were two sophomores and a freshman so that’s extremely promising for next year,” McGregor said. “I mean the goals we scored this year are already pretty high so if we continue in that path we should be able to replace a couple guys and possibly get better”

Winning the district is what the team looks forward to the most because Coach McGregor believes winning the district championship is more representative of how consistently the team is playing.

Caney Creek will now move on to a 6a school due to the new UIL 22-24 realignment. This means Caney Creek will compete against bigger schools such as Conroe, The Woodlands, Oak Ridge, Grand oaks, Willis and more. The team has been playing 6A schools all round and already have an idea of what to expect for the next upcoming seasons.

“We should already be prepared for what is coming,” McGregor said. “We have played every school in the new realignment in the past five years and against the previous seasons we have played, more or less we will have a winning record against the team we already played statistically”
