NJROTC defeats Seaford in first-year air rifle contest

Shooting its highest score of the season, the NJROTC’s first-year air rifle shooters defeated Seaford High School of Felton, Delaware, 879.5 to 624.3 in the 2023 National Air Rifle New Shooter League. Caney Creek’s NJROTC was led by Leland Orvis who shot a 246.5. The remaining contributing members were Abraham Hernandez, William Clary and Lucca Villeda.

Overall NJROTC is No. 43 against 76 other programs nationwide and currently has a 1-1 record. The competitions are held virtually.

The group will compete next against Kaiser High School from Honolulu.

Last week, No. 4 Norview High School of Norfolk, Virginia, defeated Caney Creek 1063.2 to 799.0. Orvis led CCHS in that match as well with a 249.3. The remaining contributing members were Hernandez, Sierra Watson, and Clary.

About the Event

The match is a part of the National Air Rifle “New Shooter” League, sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, which is for athletes in their first year of competition. Over 10 weeks, each team competes in eight games paired against teams with a near equal skill level each week.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete’s total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
