How would other people describe you?
Other people would describe me as more vision oriented than detail oriented, tall, hopefully funny and silly.
Was there a career you wanted to pursue OR pursued before teaching.
I started out as a petroleum engineering major, so had a scholarship A&M and petroleum engineering, and I was a recreation leader at a church camp in the summers. I loved working with the kids at the church and they were high school age kids. I loved working with the kids at the church camp so much. I’m like, I really want to do that. I want to go to teaching instead of engineering. So in a real round, I changed my major four times, I guess. But basically went from engineering to teaching.
Tell us about how you got into teaching.
I like interacting with kids. I like helping other people be successful is more fun for me than being successful myself. Like winning a trophy or medal doesn’t make me happy watching someone else be successful and helping them bring out the best in them to accomplish something is really exciting for me, so I want to do that with all of the kids here at our school.
What do you do outside of school for fun? Why?
Hunt, fish, play World of Warcraft. I love being outside, but I also love playing the fantasy world of warcraft game with my son. We’ve been doing it for probably 15 years.
When people get to know you, really get to know you, what are they most surprised to learn?
I guess that I value alone time outside of school. People might like that I love visiting with kids and visiting with teachers, parents, and so forth in school, but I can be a hermit.
Tell us the story about what you are most proud of yourself for.
Well, I’m proud of my wife, my kids, and the family that I have and that call me dad or husband for sure. Besides that, like I said, helping kids is a big deal. Seeing the kids that I’ve talked to and helped over the years do some amazing things and come back and tell me about it. So that’s so special.
Who is someone you are thankful for and why?
I’m thankful for it. My wife is incredible. She supports me through everything, and always is looking out for me. I’m very, very thankful for my family, for God, for the family I have here at school too, wonderful people, wonderful kids. It’s very, very touching to me, too, when kids just come up and start talking to me and smile and all those things tell me about their day like it’s very touching.
What advice would you give to someone pursuing a career similar to yours?
I want you to learn as much as you can about people, not about a subject. If you want to be an educator, working with people is much more important than knowing a lot about math, science, history, or something else. Because you can always learn more about the subject later, but learning how to work with people, deal with people, all of those things is huge.
What do you hope to be remembered for?
It’s my love for the kids and this community. I want to be an advocate for this whole part of Montgomery county and see it succeed. Get help, break people out of the cycle of poverty, help families change trajectories to a more successful trajectory and see that continue generation after generation.
What’s on your bucket list?
I’d like to see some historical places in Europe and things like that. It’s pretty cool. I love history. History is one of my little hobbies that I just love a lot of stuff about. So seeing some of those things you read about, big events that occurred in the past.
