How would other people describe you?
My best friend describes me as quirky and really sweet and kind, I do have a good sense of humor. A lot of people think I’m really mean at first but once they get to know me they say I’m really chill.
Was there a career you wanted to pursue OR pursued before teaching.
I wanted to go into radio voice acting. Radio I actually did do for a little bit but I found out that it doesn’t pay a whole lot of money so it’s very hard to do just radio, I found out it’s one of those things that you can do on the side but still have to work full time which is what I did, I worked full time and had a radio show. Unless you make it really big like into one of the big stations and what not. I ended up finding my passion in teaching later.
Tell us about how you got into teaching.
I actually worked in education after graduating from college. I was an admissions advisor. Then later I moved into a learners services position which is basically looking at classes for students, advising them on what classes they should take and also a little bit of tutoring. What I found out is some students didn’t have the foundational skills to be as successful in their courses as they could be. So I wanted to teach and I had a supervisor tell me I’ll be a really good teacher so I went and got alternatively certified.
What do you do outside of school for fun? Why?
I hang out with my son a lot, I hang out with my friends, I like to read, and I also like to take my dog for walks and go to the dog park.
When people get to know you, really get to know you, what are they most surprised to learn?
A lot of them are surprised to learn that I was in radio and that I lived in a different state. I was born in California and we moved to Ohio. I lived in Virginia, Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, South Dakota and now back in Texas.
Tell us the story about what you are most proud of yourself for.
The biggest thing I am proud of myself for is actually two things that ranked in the same proudness. Getting a masters degree and also buying a house for my son and I.
Who is someone you are thankful for and why?
My parents, they are very supportive and I can go to them with all of my problems and they can help me solve them. They’ve been through really tough times and they also have been there to celebrate the good times.
What advice would you give to someone pursuing a career similar to yours?
Go in with an open mind and give every student every chance that you possibly can.
What do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope to be remembered for being a good teacher and a good person.
What’s on your bucket list?
I really want to go to japan some day, that’s always been a place I would like to go.
